about the studio
MTY's approachable and intuitive style of practice focuses on movement, rather than posing or posturing. You get to be in charge of doing what feels great every time you practice. Each movement made is guided by the breath, so it feels natural, rhythmic and organic. Since every person is unique, every person's movement is also unique. This is great news for everyone, especially for those new to practicing yoga.
This freedom of movement gives individuals the opportunity to truly be aware, listen, connect and feel into one's self — safely and easily, without force or strain — in any given moment or situation. People can get more tuned into their bodies and less out of their heads, free from obligation, judgement or pre-conceived expectations. By creating this expansive space to exist in, the only thing left is to discover what you're capable of doing and being!

Michelle Timek (RYT, RPYT) founded Michelle Timek Yoga in 2011 and Free Waterfront Yoga events in 2010 in Jersey City, NJ. She is certified in Vinyasa, Pre/Postnatal and Strala Studio Intensive Training for Teachers (SIT) program. She leads various weekly group classes for Michelle Timek Yoga and works with individuals and semi-private groups in Jersey City and NYC. Michelle specializes in Pre/Postnatal, Mommy & Baby and Geriatric yoga. She has her BFA in Graphic Design and Photography from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University and designs all branding for Michelle Timek Yoga.
Michelle guides people of all ages and stages to move their bodies with fluid ease and graceful strength so they can find deeper freedom from within. It's no surprise that she's naturally drawn to the fluid and expressive style of Vinyasa Flow (movement synchronized to the breath) and Strala Yoga (the movement based system that ignites freedom) due to her lifelong love and influence of travel and the arts — dance, architecture, cooking and gardening, to name a few. Michelle's creative approach for practicing and teaching yoga is an artful cocktail of discovery, expression, consciousness and intuition. When she's not leading classes or practicing, she's behind the scenes continuously designing the face of MTY, posting flyers throughout JC, enjoying a fantastic culinary delight, cuddling with her three kitties (and husband!) or taking a loooong bubble bath. Michelle's lighthearted approach, cheerful personality and passion for helping others (humans and animals alike!), shine through in everything she does.

Zurishaddai (Zuri) Ruiz developed a passion for serving others during her 10 years working in retail merchandising and management. Colleagues and clients alike often asked what her secret was to remaining calm, positive and even “bubbly” during some of the toughest scenarios. While it wasn’t always easy, in her search for stress-relieving remedies, Zuri ultimately found yoga. She developed a committed and disciplined hatha yoga practice in her home, uncovering a new way of living. As her practice and studies progressed, she observed that the stronger her body became, the more open and stronger her mind became as well, creating a sense of improvement in different areas of her life.
Tying the power of yoga to her love for serving others, Zuri became a registered yoga teacher recognized by the Yoga Alliance. She enjoys teaching an invigorating yet easygoing Vinyasa flow, reminding students to notice and observe their bodies in each pose without attachment to any single thought or emotion; simply being and learning from the self. Zuri is a strong believer that the strength one develops in yoga practice can transcend off the mat and into all areas of life.
